Principal's Message

Dear Costa Mesa Middle School Students and Parents,

Thank you to all our wonderful middle school students and families for a great first week of a new school year 2022-2023! We begin this school year with much excitement and anticipation. Our students and staff had a well deserved summer break and now, we resume our course to prepare all students for college, career, and life. I’m pleased to announce a new addition to our middle school team with a new Assistant Principal, Mrs. Rahmatulla. She has a wealth of experience in counseling and has been an integral part of our Costa Mesa campus community over the past few years with the development of our Wellness Space and building a student-centered master schedule for both middle and high school. We welcome her as a new Maverick!

As we begin a new school year, we are delighted to share with you some changes taking place within our middle school curriculum. Our AVID programs continue to grow with now close to 100 students participating in 7th and 8th grade. This will be our second year and our AVID team will continue to build on its philosophy to prepare students for college, career, and student advocacy. We have added to our elective offerings with 8th grade electives in Computer Science and Music Technology. We have a new combo trimester wheel class for 7th and 8th grade students who are interested in an introductory course in Art, Drama, and Life Skills. The purpose of this trimester wheel is to create more opportunities for more students to try these courses and decide if they want to continue in an intermediate level of the class in the following year. Speak to our counselor for more information.

We have new staff members joining Costa Mesa Middle School including: in English Mr. Kent, Mrs. Garcia-Leung, Ms. Gutierrez, and Ms. Camarena; in math Ms. Flati; in Science Dr. Cox; in PE Ms. Daley; in Special Education Mr. Torres-Pacheco; in World Language Mr. Valenzuela. They are excited to meet all our new middle school students and to start building relationships with all of them. We understand the transition from elementary to secondary school presents many challenges, but we will persevere and give our students and staff the best we can. We encourage all students to build community through friendships, with students and staff, and get involved, through participation in activities, attending games, attending performances, and joining clubs. We hope everyone takes advantage of everything we have to offer here at Costa Mesa.
